Designers are also able to examine the sample fabrics, including new innovations and sustainable items firsthand at the show and discuss production needs face to face with multiple manufacturers. Sounds pretty great so far. I was curious if the sustainability movement had a significant effect on what would be presented there.

A major question I had for the manufacturers was whether they were willing to work with small designers and smaller quantities now versus the large quantity requirements previously (as the norm a few years back) at Texworld US and Paris. Here’s what I saw, and what I thought about the show.

While taking a look around at Javits Center to see Texworld US 2022, I was thinking of McQueen’s Autumn/Winter 2009 show, where he used high end fabric and materials to evoke garbage bags on the runway. To turn a designer’s vision (or dream!) into wearable products, they will need the most appropriate materials and fabrics, right?
I have always enjoyed Texworld and this year was no exception. I heard about their production capacities and their minimum order requirements, their proprietary patterns, and their order times. Most importantly, though, I felt and saw the fabrics. Many kinds, different finishes, or unfinished. There is room here for creativity, if you have fabric knowledge and the drive to communicate and make professional requests to develop.
As to the sustainability movement’s presence at the fabric fair? I would use the word “understated.” There were vague sustainability claims by some of the fabric suppliers, but they could have been puffery. Who knows?
A couple of organizations present are, boots on the ground, making efforts to have a little less garbage in the world. (continues below gallery)
They deserve a shoutout, so here I am, shoutin’ out to my homies at Fabscrap, a New York City based org which collects scrap from hundreds of clothing manufacturers and does good stuff with them, including acting as a resource for designers looking for scrap.
There is an organization dedicated to the certification of businesses involved in the manufacture of clothing items as meeting their environmental and sustainability standards. Regulatory stuff, not as fun as McQueen, but necessary to save the planet, people!
Texworld is a great place to discuss and test the practicality of a Designer’s vision. and to source those materials needed to make that vision a reality. Period. But, you should know what you are doing or hire a professional to help you shop a fabric show.
