From the editor: After coming back to the city from the beach summer out east, I was surprised I had to get both the SPF back out as well as the insect repellent. While some mornings are cooler and not so sunny, the afternoons are suddenly too sunny and require sunglasses and SPF. And how about the outdoor seating comfort when getting a coffee (or food!), have you noticed more bugs out lately?

Here’s what I’m doing during the seasonal transition from summer to be prepared for sun exposure and the bugs !

In the city:

  1. apply sunscreen on your face every morning. I like using SPF with tint to get an even skin tone too, Getting a lightweight formula from La Roche Posay or Avene is key.
  2. I keep a sample size of SPF 30 or 50 (any brand) in my bag at all times, just in case ii gets too bright for me or my friends.
  3. 3. I keep a bottle of insect repellent (small) in my bag at all times. I use a natural one that repels only, with no DEET. I’ve been using TickTockNaturals for years, especially during travel at the beach. I like the organic formula made of a light oil that I put very little on my hands, rub together and put on everywhere. Repels all bugs and ticks, smells lemony at first smells lemony and then dissipates, but the bugs flee as soon as they come near you.

At the beach or in the park:

  1. put on the sunscreen all over face and arms before going out.
  2. put the insect repellent on all areas of your body – arms, body, legs – before going out.
  3. Remember to re-apply both SPF and insect repellent when you sweat!

Editor tip: I sometimes put a little bit of the TickTock insect repellent oil on a napkin and wipe surfaces around me, to give me a halo of protection and repel the bugs. At home, if my window is open, I do a little of the same, wiping surface around the windows and around my bed. This bug spray is 100% oil based so it lasts longer and has some anti-aging properties.

Why does this matter now?

With all the extreme changes in the climate, there are more bugs than ever ! This includes ticks which are bringing a greater risk. The bite of a lone star tick can cause a severe food allergy. Wearing an effective and safe bug repellent has become essential. ” – Dr. Susan Eisen, Tick Tock Naturals®
