Christian Cowan’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection is very cool, and very much about the art of dressing up. Inspired by cinema and the way femininity has been played out on the silver screen, Cowan takes a little Hollywood fantasy and brings it downtown. There’s a definite sense of celebrity dressing here, but it feels younger, sharper and more personal. Silhouettes are designed to make an entrance, with the kind of glamour that catches the light without taking itself too seriously.

Corsets get a modern twist, a long dress comes with dramatic fringe, and little bows show up here and there because, well, why not? Sculpted waists and body-conscious shapes bring the sexy and sparikle, while softer details keep things playful. There’s glamour, but it isn’t overly sweet or fussy. Even the more traditional gowns feel fresh and easy to imagine on a modern downtown girl, or maybe a young celebrity heading somewhere fabulous. Elegant, confident, a little unexpected, and most importantly, cool!

And it’s not all about the big entrance. Cowan works in plenty of sportswear too—sharp jackets, cool tops and smaller pieces that bring the collection back down to earth. These are the pieces that give the fantasy some everyday attitude, making the more dramatic gowns feel even more relevant. Styled together, the mix of tailored, casual and glamorous feels very now: the kind of wardrobe where a statement jacket can be just as important as the dress you save for the big night.

Cowan looked to Hollywood from the early days of cinema through the late 1950s, playing with the idea of the silver-screen woman and everything that came with her image. Lace, crystal, corsetry and vintage textiles bring the old-school glamour, but the collection doesn’t stay in the past. Femininity becomes something to play with rather than something to simply perform. You can dress up, transform, seduce, hide, reveal and decide exactly who you want to be when the lights come on.

Backstage, the hair was crimped also in a cool way here and there, adding another hit of retro to the modern mood. On the runway, the collection moved easily from polished and elegant to full-on dramatic, with gowns and silhouettes that know how to make an entrance. It’s Hollywood fantasy with a downtown pulse-and a reminder that getting dressed can still be one of the most fun things you do.
