“Carine and I share the same vision of preserving our world’s fast-disappearing savoir-faire, and in bringing together the industry’s greatest minds to speak to the timeless intricacies of their designs, aspire to celebrate the true heart of fashion while showcasing its historical significance as an artform. We hope that these intimate conversations inspire society’s sincerest appreciation for these artisanal techniques, too.” – Adrian Cheng
Episode II welcomes Gaia Pace, director of haute couture studios and research at Christian Dior, who gives us a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and technical making of the special edition Cruise Collection 2021 Lady Dior bag – demonstrating the ways in which the modern-day Dior continues to evolve while still treasuring the house’s age-old techniques and traditions.
Building on the mixed medium techniques used by Dior, in the episode Adrian also introduces a highly intricate crafting technique Baibaoqian, which refers to wood inlaid with precious materials. Through a look at both modern and ancient artworks dating back hundreds of years, Adrian demonstrates how Baibaoqian has remained of invaluable importance throughout the evolution of Chinese art, while further showcasing the ways in which China’s next generation of creatives are infusing this savoir-faire into modern design. check it out here.
“As our world moves at a very fast pace, there is a great magic to be found in the meticulous contemporary and age-old techniques treasured in couture but also prêt-a-porter,” says Carine Roitfeld, iconic stylist, industry trailblazer, and founder of CR. “We are able to learn so much about fashion’s history through craftsmanship. As Original Masters celebrates a new wave of creative techniques, we hope to shine a light on the ancient savoir-faires that remain at the core and soul of fashion today.”
