CURATED LUXURY LIFESTYLE FASHION ART and WELLNESS magazine NYC curating good vibes by BRIGITTE SEGURA

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier

The Brooklyn Museum will be hosting as the only East Coast venue for The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. The celebrated French couturier’s work will feature exclusive material from his recent haute couture show as well as ready-to-wear collections and stage costumes worn by Beyoncé.

We are just as excited to see the exhibit again, with more cheeky adds from the  GAULTIER we love.

A whimsical wonderment will become the theatrical presentation of the many inspirations guiding the collection. The audiovisual materials, sketches, early designs, and photographs, all of which testify to Gaultier’s daring creations. The show is organized into seven thematic sections: For The Odyssey theme which now displays costumes worn by Beyoncé,  the couturier’s trademark themes of sailors, mermaids, and religious iconography all set the tone.  The Boudoir presents the designer’s fascination with lingerie and corsetry through the years, displayed through the first cone bra, created in the early 1960s, to his many designs for his men’s and women’s couture and ready-to-wear lines as well as for Hermès.

The Muses theme shows how the couturier created a new ideal of beauty, beyond the established codes of fashion and society, celebrating difference by erasing all boundaries of body size, skin color, age, religion, and sexuality.

In the Punk Cancan Parisian icons and symbols, such as the beret, the trench coat, and the Eiffel Tower, are transformed under the influence of the imagery of Pigalle’s Paris. The Skin Deep theme illustrates how Gaultier creates clothing that becomes a second skin, sometimes through trompe l’oeil effects that give the illusion of  more skin.

In the Urban Jungle theme is where cultures from around the world come together to form a new aesthetic integrated in haute couture. Mixing and matching multiethnic influences.
