CURATED LUXURY LIFESTYLE FASHION ART and WELLNESS magazine NYC curating good vibes by BRIGITTE SEGURA

let the GOOD VEGAN times roll

On my food agenda: Gluten-free yummies that are actually vegetarian.  I call it picky, they call it healthy… and on my quest for keeping the summer glow going with healthier food options, I decided to take a hike uptown again – and try out something new on my outing agenda: let the GOOD VEGAN times roll!

Though my favorite foods always lean vegetarian, I’m also gluten free (not by choice) and no matter where I go, the ‘steamed vegetables’ or salad are the only options suggested to me. Seriously? If I wanted boiled vegetables or mesclun I wouldn’t exactly need to go out to dinner to have them.  What is missing from my dinner outings and most menus is good food with FLAVOR that is gluten free with no meat.

So you can imagine, when a friend of mine suggested I try a vegan restaurant during my recent birthday week, I was kind of skeptical.. Vegan, tree-hugging, tea-drinking? not much of a celebration- but I was willing to try something new where I can actually eat a meal – not just sides. Yes, I technically fall into the ‘model diet’ when it comes to being generalized by my friends and family about food. But the truth of the matter is, I like tasty food that doesn’t have meat or seafood or eggs in it. But I’m not on a diet!!!! I like my fries and guacamole, but it’s tough to find other food that is tasty with some kind of sauce, without the worry about meat, seafood, or gluten. Frustrating! Japanese and Thai are not exempt.

After scoping the menu at BLOSSOM columbus, I noticed they had wine.. and so, one celebration vegan dinner was on the agenda after all ! Here’s how it went:

Easy to get to from downtown, my friend Lau + I arrived at a cute and minimal spot uptown. No weird smells, a cute terrace, decent enough DECO for a date, a visible bar, and dogs allowed! YAY! Didn’t feel like an alternative restaurant vibe at all. After scoping the menu for a bit, I realized I didn’t really know what half of the items were. I did find some typical items like guacamole, vegetables and Quinoa, and was so curious about what the other items were. After all, they had to be non-meaty, so maybe I could get lucky with a saucy meal and no gluten.

A thousand questions to the server later, a charming + knowledgeable man came to say hello ~ the co-founder | owner, Ronen Seri. He not only sat with us and had a little Rose (by now I’m loving it here), he gave us some suggestions. Since my friend Lau does eat meat and eggs, he talked about a few items that resembled ‘meat’, and he suggested a few flavorful veggie dishes for me. Overwhelmed with so many options (for once), we decided to let Ronen pick a few things for us.

The feast to arrive was no joke. Starting with the appetizers, I got the empanadas, with brussels sprouts and fennel topped with guacamole – YUMM. Lau’s selection was deviled tofu. Not my flavor, but the texture and look of the faux deviled eggs was a definite WOW and Lau raved at how divine the dish was! By now, I had asked at least 3x about my rolls… “are you sure this is gluten free?” Yass!

After a couple more cheers, we were at ease with Ronen’s selections to come, and he swiftly left us to enjoy the night of the vegan feast.

Next came a little trio of salads: Quinoa, Kale, and Beet. The quinoa mix was just perfect. Abundant flavor with a little tang, moist enough, and flavor rich with veggies without an overdose of bell peppers – YUM! The trendy kale salad salad choice was a different sort of delicious, tossed in a creamy tahini dressing that fused well with the not too crunchy kale. The third salad was a beet carpaccio that balanced the other two heavier meal-like salads. Nice. Hungry yet?

the Vegan feast has arrived:  A beautiful ‘rolls in bloom’ vegetable medley was on my agenda.  Cauliflower ‘Tricolore’ of purple x yellow x white, mushrooms immersed in a wine sauce and crispy rolls filled with zucchini blossoms and cashew ricotta.  Not a diet dish, thanks.

The other fantastic dish Lau tried was the Seitan Scallopini with capers + white wine: a vegan take of veal, made with a Seitan cutlet, and served with mashed potatoes and kale. Check out the pic~ you can’t tell it’s not meat! A definite choice for a hungry guy or anyone transitioning to a vegetarian diet.   I know where my first post-NYFW big meal is going to be. Flavorful Blossom is a gluten-free vegan comfort food haven.

La gourmandise: As if all that wasn’t enough, I tried the coconut tiramisu.  My smile says it all… and here you thought I didn’t eat.  Go eat vegan – and bring a date. Blossom Columbus’s Service is decent, the food is hearty + YUM.
