BEHIND the LENS: Andrew H. Walker | GETTY images
catching up: FDM + NYFW… attending shows, identifying trends, writing reviews, it’s all there, and more. Bringing the runway and surrounding scene to life, and highlighting those precious few who capture it properly – what better way to get a glimpse than go straight to the pick of litter? This fall 2012 season FashionDailyMag shadowed celebrity + fashion photographer Andrew Walker, an extension of Getty images (house photography for the whole shebang), as he worked the collections presented at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York...
Walker has been in on the action for over ten years and often serves as official photographer for event organizers IMG. Our Editor in Chief Brigitte Segura was in the thick of things, maneuvering 3 days for a follow-along, despite their jam packed calendars. Given that the hike from the Lincoln Center lobby to backstage seemed miles long, and not to mention Brigitte’s press pass paled in comparison to Walker’s powerful “all access” badge, scheduling was tricky, but luckily with Getty tips, she coordinated FDM coverage with Walker’s docket, Fired up – officially at NYFW Day 2.

First up, CONCEPT KOREA For Getty’s chosen one, it’s all about getting the right shot at the right time.
Even with herds of onlookers being shuffled in and out before the models, Walker was already heading to front of house where a crowd closed in around Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl fame as attendees and paparazzi fought for a shot.
There was also a hotbed of activity at CHARLOTTE RONSON, as Charlotte was being interviewed right and left, like the attending celebs including Nicky Hilton, Russell Simmons, and Angela Simmons sitting front row, and Twilight’s Nikki Reed hanging backstage. Second day of the tail – a quick meet up in the morning, just after LACOSTE at 10 A.M., both B + W darting back and forth in the afternoon… while Walker set up for the 2 P.M. show, Brigitte went from backstage MARA HOFFMAN to backstage at HERVE LEGER and she interviewed Lubov Azria at LEGER, Walker jetted off to photograph atmosphere for IMG.
With Brigitte just steps behind, Walker was in full form scoring big with beautiful imagery of Monique Lhuillier’s line in the Theatre before the show. The final day for our arrangement landed on the fifth day of NYFW with Lincoln Center as busy as ever: Carlos Miele at the Stage, followed by Zang Toi in the Studio, showstopper Reem Acra also at the Stage, and just a few steps over to the Avery Fisher Hall for CHRIS BENZ, with several stops and HELLOs before + after. So after our “looksee” behind the lens, and the accompanied chatter, there are a few things we’ve come to know. Andrew Walker is charming, he’s talented, and has a serious work ethic. His laid-back personality propels him in the chaotic world of fashion + celebrity photography, he is able to work a room while using his keen eye to land that perfect shot.
He told FDM, “have a strategy and then follow, adapt to the scenario; be prepared.” Brigitte asked Walker what he thought of Lincoln Center in comparison to the Bryant Park tents, he replied, “There’s more sophistication to the space, LOVE the neighborhood, not as touristy, less of a ‘spectacle.’” In a previous FDM interview he shared a favorite fashion week moments from season 1 at LINCOLN center, as well as some of his on the go grooming habits, click to read more about his personal style at the shows. So much to see, impossible to do it all…but with Walker in charge, scene stealing photographs complete the experience. here are a few… how does he get everyone to smile pretty?
