Although known for her classic wedding dresses and elegant female aesthetic, Monique Lhuillier’s FW 2012 show at Lincoln Center proved to be an edgier and more sultry showing for the designer. Leather and lace thoroughly marked this collection. Most notably, leather corset belts cinched in already sleek dresses to give a long and lean appearance. Black leather gloves and black Manolo Blahnik heels with winding straps were paired with leather dresses in reds and blacks, giving a bit of a fetish feel. Lace dresses in black, red, and vibrant prints swept the runway.
My standout piece featuring lace was Lhuillier’s take on the popular cutout dress, in which she featured lace in the exposed area. Sequins also made many appearances as embellishments, most eye-catching to me was their use as gold epaulets. Lhuillier closed the show with a series of gowns that will no doubt make perfect award show choices, constructed of red and black lace over sheer nude material that is at once subtly suggestive and glamorous. Especially the closing gown, with a constructed lace bodice accented in leather around the waist and shoulders with a organza skirt so full of pleats and volume that it stole the show.
