CURATED LUXURY LIFESTYLE FASHION ART and WELLNESS magazine NYC curating good vibes by BRIGITTE SEGURA

Academy of Art University Fall 2014 NYFW

For nearly ten years the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University has premiered the collections of students and recent graduates at Mercedes-Benz NYFW. For the Fall 2014 season thirteen designers were selected for the prestigious opportunity.

“Part of our commitment to our students is to help launch their careers and have their work seen by industry professionals,” said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University.

In total, eight collections were presented, four of which were collaborations between Fashion and Textile Design students. The first capsule to come out set things into high gear with phenomenal textile detailing and silhouette shaping in a vibrant color palette. Designer Jaci Hodges worked with Nisha Hanna Btesh to create a line using the Japanese technique of resistance dying called Shibori. Next up, Frank Tsai’s menswear collection with Andrea Nieto that showcased exaggerated elements with a moody theme. Collaborators Flora Cervante and Lori Solem were motivated by industrial rawness and by the illustrations of the French artist Gustave Doré for their vignette and personal travels to Hong Kong inspired Earnest Huang and textile counterpart Hong Ni to create a womenswear grouping. Joseph Khawane and Mingyu Dum were driven by military style and centered on textured intensity.

Of those working alone, each brought their own momentum to the medley. Designer Arijana Kajdic focused on craft to highlight hand-dyeing to hand-beading alongside French lace provided by the Sophie Hallette Company. Elizabeth Castellon fused tailoring with futuristic architecture and sculpture. With knitwear as the emphasis, Jasmine Gonzalez’s collection included hand-knitted pieces, hand-made yarns, and hand-dyed velvet.

Always there to lend a supportive eye, when it comes to young designers we’re delighted to witness them giving it their all. Beyond the talent and the fanfare, was a notable casting of models of the male variety that have been visibly active on the scene including Guerrino Santulliana and Dima Dionesov. fdmLOVES AAU | ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY FALL 2014 selects by Brigitte Segura, written by Sarah A.
