MANISH ARORA spring 2014 PFW
Glow sticks were the only thing missing from Manish Arora’s latest offering for spring 2014, which played out like a Gatsby-themed rave in sherbet and psychedelic hues. Inspired by the imagery of 1920’s icon Josephine Baker mixed with a club-kid edge, the collection combined sportswear with the Charlston through a number of sweatshirts, lightweight parkas and fringed skirts with fluorescent beads.
Banging beats courtesy of M.I.A complemented the kaleidoscopic homage to the flapper era, which featured a string of drop-waist, knitted dresses, pebbly sweatshirts with multicolor embroidery, and jazzy fringed skirts. Popping accessories complimented the designer’s spring 2014 offering as if Baz Luhrmann himself had helped transform the 1920’s-themed looks into club-ready attire, with fluorescent bangles, banana-shaped earrings, and neon beaded bracelets keeping things upbeat.
Prints, sequins, and embroidery were key amid the array of stunning dresses, sleeveless hoodies, and asymmetrical skirts, splattered in a palette of sorbet lemon, mint green, and lilac. Perfect for chilly spring evenings, lightweight parkers were given a modern twist through cheeky prints of ballrooms, staircases, and perfume bottles.
The Indian-native designer backed up the collection’s culture clash through intricate beading and embellishments, as seen on a statement backpack (just make sure you don’t stash it in coat check at your next candy raver adventure). Flapper silhouettes with chained tassels in comfy jersey dominated the mix, given a feminine, flirty feel through a spray of sherbet pink, lemon drop yellow, peppermint green, and other candy-colored hues.
Bejeweled ornamentation adorned free-falling shapes in dresses, evidencing the influence of the designer’s heritage. Also key were sleeveless pieces and one-shoulder motives teamed with pleated skirts. Injecting a dose of uptown glamour were V-neck plunging necklines, adding a dose of femininity to the pastel rainbow-colored mix.
Models sashayed down the runway to M.I.A’s popular “Bad Girls” hit song, but one could be forgiven for thinking they were anything but sweet-as-pie due to their 1920’s-style bird feather headpieces and towering heels with fluorescent pink soles. fdmLOVES MANISH ARORA spring 2014 selects by Brigitte Segura, written by Khia Mercer.
