go BLONDE for summer

SUMMER HAIR: ride the more blonde hair groove for summer! Now that it’s officially swimsuit season, catch the bright(er) rays on your mane! While we’re just baring the summer skin on the East Coast,  we can brighten our hair to maximize the faux summery effect now.  I took the “more blonde” plunge recently, and visited my favorite curly hair specialists uptown at Ouidad.

Though it’s definitely more than hot already, the fast transition from cold to hot didn’t allow most of us time to get “natural” summer highlights.

From the Editor: Over the past few months, I’ve been getting the mane back in curly shape thanks to my new fave hair master Jason @Ouidad, who specializes in curly hair only. We’ve been working on the health and bounce of my curls to let them flow naturally, and doing a little color magic too- mostly a refresher. In the spirit of summer, we went to town going even brighter!
As a curly haired brunette with red tones, it’s often difficult to get natural “highlights” to look blonde. Either it’s too much of a contrast, or the whole mane still reads reddish and the “brassy” word starts flying around.

The natural texture of my kind of curls go from very curly to big fabulous waves, with a little frizz and wild in between- depending on wind and humidity… and of course how much I touch my hair throughout the day.  Though having a lot of texture is super nice, the right mix of highlights in the right spots TO WORK WITH the curls is not as easy as it appears. The trick is to do multiple shades that WORK with the natural CURLS to frame your face.

When was the last time your hair person considered the size of the curl (dry) + the frame of your face while “painting” your hair?  Thankfully, I got the royal curl painting treatment recently with Jason, who also updated me with the nouveau color lingo:

“First of all, this is “hair painting” – not highlights, and not balayage, as the colorist “paints” on the color free hand like an artist. In Brigitte’s case, we used a Triflective color technique, where 3 tones of blonding went on, complementing the curvature of the curls. Keeping in mind the red-friendly tendency of her hair and oval face, the background color was placed on the ends, while the foundation was a different tone to enhance + make her face a bit more round…”

The result? my happy smiling face and a lot of compliments on my hair texture, which incidentally, looks even more full- thanks to the the multi toned blonding. Check out some of my latest snaps out and about..
