Beginning in 2005, this hot event has showcased numerous designs of AAU grads during NYFW. Textile Design students, five B.F.A. Fashion Design students, and four M.F.A. Fashion Design students.  Here’s a sneak peek at the students’ sketches from the upcoming show.

a fashion overload with this range of new talent. Maclay Bowers, Mina Fadaie, Joe Chung, Korkor Apo, Guiping April Feng, Kyung Hwa Kim, Eli Daniel Odisho,  Liza Quiñones, Erica Laba, Angela Sison, and Massayuki Ito united together for the collection. Other featured grads include Jie Jessie Liu , Jisun Lee, Tanja Milutinovic, Iglika Vasileva Matthews, Ginie C.Y. Huang, Yanfei Fan, Jarida Karnjanasirirat, and Stephina Touch.  Numerous mills helped make the collections possible with: silk and jacquards from Denis&Fils, Belinac, Malfroy Million, Sprintex, Philea, Soieries  Chambutaires, print from AB Creations, lace from Goutarel, André Laude, Solstiss, Sophie Hallette, knits from Henitex International, Deveaux, Sprintex, Philea, wools from Clarenson, sports/technic fabrics from Roudière and Avelana, muslins, tweeds, and taffetas from Malfroy Million.

Before viewing these looks, a brief overview on the fashion designers’ and their collabs with textile designers, will help you delve further into Spring 2013. Lee made classics current, taking 1920’s mens suiting and adding various lapels and collars, while revamping women’s wear silhouettes, also thanks to the help of textile design major Quiñones. Liu’s collection has a deep color palette, and focuses on shape and a sharpness that’s inspired by the artist Anish Kapoor’s sculptures, in which Milutionvic designed the prints for Liu’s looks. Looking for heightened hues of orange and white (with a splash of purple) ? Check out Matthews’s collection, that also plays with movement along with the striking colors, taking inspiration from Zaha Hadid, the famed architect. Still pushing the limits, Fan focused on the windows of buildings (maybe a window into fashion’s future ?), looking at their transparency, angles, and constant patterns. Huang provided a pop of citrus colors-from reds to lime to yellow-taking her own spin on the bright images of Japanese photog Ninagawa Mika. Touch shows how to start fresh-with an all-white collection that sources tiled roofs and clean lines within traditional Asian architecture. Karnjanasirirat played with 3-D elements-shown on the pleats, lapels, and collars, while always keeping in mind her imitation of a relief sculpture’s structure. A fashionable overload with a range of new talent we’re hoping to see grow, check out in full view by clicking gallery photos.  written by Mary Anderson.
