ART in the JEWEL: Sevan Biçakçi

Bedazzled by the jewels: Diamond in the rough is not simply a cliché for Sevan Biçakçi, but the basis for all his eye-catching pieces. Each ring is a combination of numerous art forms, with everyone from intaglio (reverse) gemstone carvers to painters adding extra to his midas touch. This designer’s rare form of artistry has garnered some of the highest honors within the jewelry world, including the Best Independent Designer for the Tanzanite Foundation Award in 2007,  a triple winner of the Town & Country Couture Awards as well a triple winner of the Couture Design Awards, to name a few.

No wonder notables including Celine Dion, Liv Tyler, Halle Berry, Mary Kate Olsen, Ashley Olsen, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Brooke Shields, and Tory Burch have donned the beautifully designed pieces.

At the tender age of 12, Sevan began learning the jewelry trade as an apprentice to famed jeweler Hovsep Chatak. His work is truly a journey back in time when quality maxed out quantity (while always leaving us wanting for more). Sitting in the shade of some of the most legendary locations from the Hagia Sophia Church to the Topkapi Palace, he boldly brings new looks to the design table while reintroducing classics to unfamiliar visitors. From the brand’s own manufacturing methods to not letting the jewelry industry’s shifting seasons determine the turnaround rate of the rings, it gives him the chance to absorb the world around him for inspiration. Biçakçi has transformed his traditional cutting methods for newer generations-taking his Armenian heritage and experiences throughout Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar to come alive through his creations.

Regretfully, mum’s the word for some of his tantalizing techniques;   Wonder how the seagulls look like they are hovering in his pieces? Here’s a little hint, the intaglio (reverse carving method).  Despite some elements remaining a well-kept secret, he has been kind enough to share a few… Biçakçi fights the popular methods of factory production by continuing the tradition of handmade jewels. Even taking over 12 months to shape thousands of microscopic tiles on the seablue All Over Istanbul ring, is well worth the wait; as his fearless approach to perfection is what we love most. His creations are definitely a blast from the past, using rose-cut diamonds which was the preeminent diamond cut in Europe from the 16th well into the 18th century. For example, a rose-cut diamond is chosen not based on its brilliance, but how it interacts with the look overall.  Full-force bling with history, nothing less to be expected from this rare JEWEL of a talent, Sevan Biçakçi… Written by Mary Anderson.
