Zimmerman Spring 2014 NYFW

Australian label Zimmerman’s spring 2014 New York Fashion Week collection adopted a literal approach to the season’s annual circus. The lineup walked a tightrope between fanciful clown-inspired looks and fierce performance pieces with a dramatic edge. The only thing missing was a whip in the aptly-titled “Ringmaster” show, which featured floaty, organza frocks and frilly, ruffle collars, offset by voluminous metallic vests with plunging necklines.

Best known for its swimwear, designer Nikki Zimmerman’s Spring 2014 offering featured racy bikinis and criss-crossed elastic banding complete with the label’s signature laser-cut frills. The opening look’s feminine, pretty feel – complete with diamond and polka dot motifs – evolved into a more sinister vibe, complete with graphic patterns and metallic stripes.

Sleek pony hair and natural makeup added a hint of youth to the whimsical collection, whilst cage-like neck pieces and oversized cuffs provided a stateside edge, enabling you to take the look from day to night without lifting a finger. One standout piece included a long, black, strappy dress featuring laser-cut graphics with a harlequin diamond pattern.

Print and texture were key to the theatrical show during which ethereal pieces were grounded by knife-sharp, plunging lines and edgy metallics. Bandage style cut-away tops were paired with paper-bag skirts, whilst drop-waisted dresses featured embossed ropes and honeycomb lace. A far cry from the sands of Bondi Beach, Zimmerman’s performance at the Lincoln Centre concluded with a look worn by Australian-native model Ruby Jean Wilson, who rocked a drippy black-and-white “mascara” print dress.

Whilst designer Nikki Zimmerman only popped her head out for a brief moment at the show’s conclusion, it was clear that the ringmaster didn’t need a whip to show she was in charge of her troupe. Loved.  fdmLOVES ZIMMERMAN SPRING 2014 written by Khia Mercer.
