the NEW kids: Academy of Art spring 2015 preview

The new kids: the next batch of students and graduates from Academy of Art University will have their time to show their Spring 15 collections in just a few days at NYFW. The lucky twelve young designers showing their fresh and young collections at Lincoln center include: Die Zhou, Mia Jianxia Ji, Szu Chi Huang, Madison Detro, Szu Chi Huang, and Wei Bai. Additionally, a collab of 7 designers create a Spring 2015 menswear collection: Asiyat Tsalikova, Max Lu, Liz Li, Jihyun Kim, Jingci Wang, Yin Yang and Yaqiong Zhou.

Some highlights from the pool of talent showing their collections at the Academy of Art spring 2015 show held at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Die Zhou, M.F.A. Fashion Design Die’s strength in sleeve and shoulder structure of her collection shows her connection to her nature and butterfly inspiration.

Mia Jianxia Ji, M.F.A. Fashion and Knitwear Design Mia’s collection, which she has named “SILHOUKNIT,” uses the texture of knitted fabrics to evoke the shapes and feelings of Ana Rajcevic’s art collection “Animal – The Other Side Of Evolution.” Her interpretation of shapes are evident in the construction of the hemlines and knotted details.

Madison Detro, M.F.A. Fashion Design Fall 2014 collections. Leather and suede are the chosen subjects used to convey prominent lines and geometric shapes that dominate this collection.

Szu Chi Huang, M.F.A. Fashion Design  Szu pays homage to traditional Japanese ink paintings and calligraphy. Her use of different fabric techniques are evident in her collection. Leather and mesh are prominent fabrics used for textural purposes.

Wei Bai, M.F.A. Fashion Design  The layered effects of her garments give the construction of her pieces the illusion of separates, but are in fact one-pieces. Her teddy boy interpretation gives this collection a playful tomboyish effect.

Also included in this showcase is collaborative Spring 2015 menswear collection created by seven designers, Asiyat Tsalikova, Max Lu, Liz Li, Jihyun Kim, Jingci Wang, Yin Yang and Yaqiong Zhou.
