  • TELA STELLA: the genesis, the origin.   In1982, Stone Island was founded with just one fabric in 6 different  colors. 30 years later, the exact replica of a piece from its 1st collection is available for fw12. The  fabric was inspired by a study on the technical and functional features of tarpaulins for military trucks.
  • REFLECTIVE knit: playing with material.. transferring technology from fabric to yarn, the ultimate in Stone Island research. Created using a Reflective yarn, built with micro plates covered with thousands of glass microspheres enclosed in a polyester net, printed using pressure/heat sublimation to melt the fibers and get an even surface with a jersey and high performance Windstopper® liner.
  • 30/30: engineeringthe garment, the sum of the key Stone Island technologies. 2 reversible garments in one, worn in 30 different modes. In Raso Gommato Prismat ic Cover, a cotton-based  inside with a polyurethane film, garment dyed and  in Thermo Reflective, a heat sensitive and reflective fabric knitted inside.

about Stone Island:  Developing looks that adapt to various surroundings- for assured protection from the elements, focusing on quality, not quantity. Colors and patterns shifting through light, space, and air for an awe-inspiring effect.  In 1982, former designer for the brand, Massimo Osti, took unexpected, durable materials and softened it by washing with pumice stones for several hours.

He eventually used the fabric to develop the groundbreaking Tela Stella Collection- in which the label featured solely seven jackets out of this soft, yet structured material- a design template that will remain essential for the brand. Research is a vital aspect of Stone Island’s design and development, archiving in house all of the garments and dyes ever developed.

Osti introduced the militaristic compass badge logo, that symbolizes the love for the sea and an aim for constant research- a theme that not only unites all of the collections through the military influences, but always with a modern edge. This constant search for new technologies in unexpected areas is a crucial aspect of Stone Island-and can be found even within the history of Gruppo Finanziario Tessile (GFT), the manufacturing company that President Carlo Rivetti’s family helped develop over 100 years earlier. With sustainable jackets and shirts metamorphosing into various hues before your eyes, one aspect of the company will always remain unchanged-functionality and forward-thinking…  boldly reaching to the future.
