FashionDailyMag [brigitte segura] : WOW so you are the BIG wig : main RISER photographer for MBFWNY| GETTY this season covering for IMG…

That’s a huge responsibility, how is that?

Frazer Harrison:  A little scary.

FDM: So the show buck starts | stops with you… whats your ASTRO sign? Are you married, does your wife come along?

F: Aries… My family and I live s in LA. I have a 5-year old daughter who I’m sure would get a kick out of going to a fashion show, but the novelty would wear off afterwards, as I  wouldn’t get to see them much because of the busy NYFW schedule.

FDM: there are alot of shows in New York… What kind of personality does it take to survive as a PHOTOGRAPHER on the riser?

F: I think you have to have patience, a good tolerance level and the ability to be able to withstand being surrounded and crowded in by people.

‘This is not a job for claustrophobics, agoraphobics, achluophobics, acousticophobics’and a few others I could mention…

FDM:: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED, HOW DID YOU GET HERE?
F:  I was a photo-journalist in the UK for over 15 years before coming to the US.  This is my 8th year with GETTY at fashion week.  I am currently based in L.A.

FDM: What are your daily challenges?

F: simply getting the job done right and well… I’m very critical of my own work  [and always find faults in a shoot ]… I approach every show with the motto “never presume it is going to go OK – double check everything before it starts.” Once a show starts and something goes wrong, there isn’t much you can do about it… So you really have to get it right first time – EVERY time..
the POSTURE…  You start feeling the pain after the first day, standing up straight and other odd positions with the camera… and there is a LOT of STANDING around -[Frazier stands up and stretches showing off some fancy stretches]…and then MORE  standing around, standing in the same position for a minimum of 60 minutes, it’s  bad for your posture.

FDM: we noticed ‘a certain physique’ that some RISER photographers have..

is it from carrying all the equipment all the time?

F: [chuckles] They’re crazy! There are guys that do NY, then London, Paris and Milan.  I do NY, Miami and other entertainment  SPECIAL events,  like the Oscars – an ENTERTAINMENT entertainment photographer at GETTY,  Here at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week  I’m shooting  the runway for Spring 2011 for IMG.

JACK OF ALL TRADES, MASTER of none…

F: Well,  I’m a jack of all trades, master of none, from having a photojournalistic background + different jobs I’ve handled in the past 25 years.
FDM: WELL, you must be a MASTER  of sorts to have the HOUSE position, non? WHATs your day like? What’s a  MASTERs schedule during the season? [we got a little sweet-and-sour FASHION smile from frazer]

F: I do 8 shows a day, about 1k photos per show, about 200k photos a year…and get a couple of short breaks to grab food and drink now and then…

FDM: whats in your BAG ? the ONE piece of  EQUIPMENT you can’t live without?

F: The camera (Nikon D3s), a lens and memory cards. Then chewing gum (the breath!) and water.

FDM: AHH the NIKON club…

F: Amazing piece of equipment, very advanced camera.  If  tethered we can transmit images instantly to editors.  We have done this for a few seasons, but too many wires made it a tad problematic.  It is essential at the Oscars for getting those glam shots out to world fast.

FDM: what IS  the perfect SHOT  from the runway:
F: Dress in perfect line, colors, feet down preferably, it’s a few shots, full ½, etc.
FDM:, what do YOU call the NEWBIES on the riser?we [the editors] notice there’s always a new batch of photographers every season, sometimes running over our feet with bags…

F: Tourists. {all laugh}

FDM Sooo, DO YOU MENTOR the tourists or just tell them to get out of the way?  [more smiles].

F: I made the same mistakes when I started and listened to the advice I was given.  If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be talking with you now…

FDM: WHAT was your moment this past MBFWNY SPRING 2011 season?

F:  The Richie Rich 9pm show on the 1st day.  He started with a fashion wearable collection for once, and after 25 looks, disrupted, then he broke into the drama we’ve know Richie to do for many years.  It was like a party on the runway!

FDM: we know RICHIE RICH + DRAMA on the runway go well together.  It was pretty amazing to have ELLEN DeGENERES walk the show, Did the riser RISE to the occasion?

FDM:: what WAS a true fashion MOMENT for you, where you knew you had made it?

F: I still think of myself as naive when it comes to the fashion world, and in retrospect, I realize a moment that  hit home recently with the death of Alexander McQueen, whom I had recently worked with and had stood there having a totally un-fashion related conversation concerning something mundane like the weather or celebrity. It wasn’t until after his death that it occurred to me that this man was one of the worlds most innovative designers and that’s all I could think of to talk with him about??!!

FDM:LOOKING BACK at New York fashion week Spring 2011 shows, what are your thoughts of  the LINCOLN CENTER venue

F: the Hotels.   I like the area and set-up,  a closer hotel to the venue will be less walking and cold to endure in the winter.. I’m not looking forward to freezing..

FDM:WHAT does it take to be successful as a riser photographer?  a certain personality?
F: Consistency + Getting it right every time [without fail, show after show, season after season]

FDM:: Whats the craziest thing you’ve done to get the shot?

F: I’ve had a few occasions which involved hanging off church steeples, suspensions bridges, cranes, out of helicopters and light aircraft and places which tend to be very high up, dangerous.   Not good,  I don’t do so well with heights…

FDM: WHATs next for you…  and is this per season?

F: Every day is different in this job. I’ll get back to LA where I will be shooting everything  from the world of celebrity, premieres, parties, portraits,  candids, and baby pictures, – then  back to NY in February for round one of 2011 for Fall shows at LINCOLN center.
FDM: THANKS Frazer for giving us a behind the lens view and some tips for rising photographers.. and IF NOT  a photographer, what would you be?

F: Who knows, a cashier at Marks and Spencer or a deep sea diver.  lol.  Either way, I’m glad I’m doing what I love doing. I really can’t imagine what I would have done if I had not managed to wrangle myself into a job in a newspaper. I feel blessed  for the place I am now…
