CHRISTIAN DIOR haute couture fall 2013

Raf Simons was inspired by all types of women for his Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall 2013 collection. Europe, America, Asia and Africa are all represented in this mix that’s ambitious and enjoyably dizzying. The pieces aren’t split up into 4 separate sections, but meshed together into one super line. Perhaps it’s to represent our vast world and the mixing of cultures. It’s a bold move for this traditional house, and Simons is ready to make the change.

Parisian chicness is spotted in the gorgeous jackets and skirt suits. There’s something so European in these textured looks. American sportiness is evident in collared blouses and bright colored dresses with fit cuts. Several sheer dresses are barely dresses at all, but the silhouettes are still devastatingly feminine. As for Asian inspiration, kimono sleeves are on shirts and dresses. A black gown with star and floral detailing borders on kitchy, but it still has a fun bite. African tribal graphic dresses are the most dramatic looks here. A mesh-like sleeveless dress is mad fierce in Sahara sunset hues. Out of any of the looks showcased, the red mink ensemble has us all a-flutter. It’s the right kind of attention-grabbing look a dreary January day needs.

Like many designers this couture season, Simons wants to offer a line for all women…not just those frequent couture buyers. Dior no longer signifies crispness, but rather, adventurous empowerment. Change is good, and it will be exciting to see what else this designer has up his sleeves.
