CATCHING UP at UN world fashion forum

Hosted at the United Nation‘s Headquarters in NYC, the first-ever World Fashion Forum shows that fashion and function aren’t limited to your closet, but rather can become a catapult of change worldwide. “Fashion is relevant to everyone,” WFF observes. That means from the high to low end, the forum is focused on ensuring the core of the industry remains strong. Kicking off on International Women’s Day on March 8th, WFF showcased fashion and the UN’s frontrunners by overall providing a voice for the combination of industries with Fern Mallis as the panel’s moderator known as NYFW Founder, Former Executive Director of CFDA, and also Former IMG Fashion Senior VP.

This collab excitingly encompasses several aspects of Fashion-making this a purposeful, powerful project. Completing the panel included Stephanie Winston Wolkoff who is the President/CEO SWW Creative, IMG Fashion Consultant, Inaugural Director of Fashion at Lincoln Center; Chairman of LVMH North America Pauline Brown; and Ashley Jordan, the CEO of Fashion One.

Fashion’s power is catching the attention of leaders that spans beyond the realms of style, since it pumps through $1.3 Trillion dollars and encompassing over 25 million people. Fashion surpasses other industries by having a “significant economic force, global sphere of influence, and influential cause advocate, the UN believes. More plainly,  the industry can bring the goods and back it up. The UN opened and closed the event with President of the Global Millennium Development Foundation Slobodan Damiyano and Assistant Secretary General of the UN/Deputy Executive Director of UN Women H.E. Lakshmi Puri. With the UN, the WFF’s mission is unite the “industry with government and civil society” to ensure the global welfare for all, from the employee’s to the CEO’s.

From the fashion side that means tackling objectives such as focusing on technology for product origination details to making sure employees can have a hand in influencing the globe, just to name a few. While some of the Government Policy approaches will include components  such as trade and human rights, while encouraging younger shoppers and communities to choose ethically and environmentally-friendly purchases. The World Fashion Forum is determined to make a difference, and with these industry heavyweights backing it up, they will definitely have a lasting impact. Written by Mary Anderson.
